To determine your break even point for selling ebooks on the internet, you have to look at your skill set as well as what you are willing to learn. Before we consider that, let’s take a look at some costs that are common to any internet business.
Domain registration – $9.95 a year – I’m sure you can find cheaper domain registration costs but around ten bucks is common.
Web hosting – web hosting varies more than domain registration costs. I’m sure you can find free web hosting and you can find hosting for as much as $20 or $30 a month. Let’s just say you find hosting for $10 a month.
So far your annual costs are $130 for your internet business. Now we have to evaluate your skill set. Can you create your own web pages? If you have no clue on how to do this, your expenses go way up and not just for initial design but also future updates. I’ve stayed out of becoming a web designer because it’s way too much hassle to deal with people who want to change something on their website everyday. I can understand why they want to do it (because it is their baby). If you want me to put up with that hassle, I need to see the money. So now, perhaps, you can see why learning some html is essential. You could easily spend several thousand dollars on web design and web page updates.
Other expenses include advertising. I would consider an annual advertising budget of $1200 – $2400. If you are able to generate sales right away, you’ll need a delivery method. I believe Linklok is about $150 or you can go with PayLoadz, (free up to $100 a month in sales and then varying subscription levels).
A shoestring budget for your website ebook business would be about $1500 if you can design your own web pages. If not, you may be looking at $5000 for the first year.
