What is Google Alerts? Google Alerts is a Google program that keeps you up to date on the keywords that you specify by sending you emails (at the frequency that you choose) on those keywords as they appear on the internet.

For example, I could sign up at google alerts and indicate to Google that I want them to email me once a day on anything that appears on the internet with the keywords, “ebook reader.” As “ebook reader” is mentioned on websites or in the news, Google will assemble these instances and email me links to those pages along with a short description concerning each page/link. “Ebook reader” may not appear on a daily basis on the web and thus Google would not send me emails on a daily basis if that were the case.

With Google monitoring the web for me, I can take my daily email update from them, review it for the most interesting links, and then create a post on recent news in the “Ebook Reader” world. The post would consist of the links and short descriptions supplied to me by Google. Or I could dig deep into the referenced sites and write my own review of each.

If I wanted to, I could put up a daily post on my site about recent news on “ebook readers.” This gives people who are interested in ebook readers a reason to come back to my site on a daily basis. I’m basically providing them daily news on a topic that they are interested in. I may want to encode the link so that my site becomes more than just a rebound site where people come for a second and then click away to another site. I also will want to add valuable content to my site so that the daily “ebook reader” updates are not the main focus but merely a feature that is a human edited list of the best the web has to offer about ebook readers.

Google alerts can save you a lot of time, can make your site fresh and up to date and provide daily content which comes in handy for those days when you just don’t have a lot to say. Such daily content may earn you a daily following from repeat visitors. A nice ace in the hole for bloggers. To that end, make sure you provide them with a way to subscribe to your blog so that they can stay informed of your next news update.
