I occasionally visit John Chow’s blog on making money online and he will review products provided that you pony up the $400 or so to have your product “reviewed.” One day he was reviewing a Wordpress theme and since I use Wordpress quite a bit and am constantly looking for new and better themes, I gave the review a once over. On this particular day, Brian Gardner’s Revolution theme was featured. I took one look at that theme and knew right away that it truly was a revolution. I’ll tell you right now, straight up that I’m not being paid anything nor will I receive any proceeds from this entry. I’m just a satisfied customer.
If you are reading this right now then you are already experiencing the Revolution theme. What’s so great about his Revolution theme? Can I begin to count the ways?
1 - Most obvious - if you go to the home page of this site, you will see the most beneficial feature of this theme. Whereas traditional blogs are typically formatted so that you really only see the first/latest post at first glance, the Revolution theme permits you to immediately see a half dozen or so posts without scrolling (I’ve altered the default settings and thus moved the “Recently Written” snippets to the bottom; otherwise, you could see even more posts). I believe that most people find a website or blog and if, at first glance, they don’t see what they are looking for, they move on to another site. With a traditional Wordpress theme, the first time viewer will generally see one post. With the Revolution theme, you have the ability to show that first time viewer several posts and the ability to pique their interest and get them to explore your site. In essence, you can show viewers a broader spectrum of what your blog is about. Viewers generally come to a site, see one post, and make a determination of whether the site is relevant to their search or not. Give viewers a bigger slice of the pie than you can with the traditional Wordpress theme.
2 - Since you have the ability to put several posts on the home page and if your posts are all related, the Revolution theme can help boost your search engine ranking. For example, if I can put up 6-10 posts on ebooks on the home page, generally, Google will find my home page more relevant than other websites for searches related to “ebooks.”
3 - The Revolution Theme takes advantage of YouTube videos. It allows you to easily add relevant videos to your site thus giving your site a multimedia dimension. What do people normally do when they see a video? They stop and watch it. What are you trying to do with your blog or web page? Get people to stop and look at it.
4 - The Revolution Theme also offers several great advertising spots where you can plug in your favorite ads or other revenue generating material.
I think that you will see more and more of these magazine/newspaper styled themes. They sure offer much more than your traditional Wordpress themes.
