I have blogs with over 700 comments waiting to be moderated and 698 of them are just spam. How do you deal with these sploggers, as they are known? Well that’s where a nifty plugin comes into play and it’s already on your blog.

Akismet is a wordpress plugin that detects spam comments and deletes them after a certain amount of time. It does this automatically. The official description is – “Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.” There is even a setting in the plugins menu for configuring Akismet. You can check a box to automatically discard spam comments on posts older than a month.

To set up Akismet do the following:

Go to your Wordpress dashboard and select “Plugins.”

From there you need to activate the Akismet Plugin.
