A reader recently asked how to add a video to an ebook. I’m sure that there are many ways of going about this but I think the simplest way would be to put the video on a website and have a link to the video within the ebook.

If your ebook is in pdf format, you can make clickable links within your ebook using Adobe Acrobat Professional. I would make sure to put the text that is clickable in a different color (perhaps a shade of blue) and indicate to the reader that they can see the video if they click on the blue text (assuming that they are viewing the ebook on a computer or on another device that would allow access to the web).

Adding links within your ebook is a great way to enhance your product’s value to the customer. It’s also any easy way to update the ebook. I like to add links within an ebook to keep past customers returning to my website. For example, if I go into more detail on a topic at the website, I refer the ebook reader to the website with a link.

Another great way to use links is to add more content to the ebook. I sell a guide to the eviction process. From within the ebook, I link to several forms in Microsoft Word format that the reader may require. Instead of having to deliver the ebook along with several forms in multiple downloads, I simply link to all the forms from within the ebook.

As you can see, adding links to other material on the web can significantly enhance the value of your ebook.

I just released my latest ebook – “79 tips to break 80 in golf.” When you pick a topic that you know well and are passionate about, your ebook almost writes itself. I cranked this one out pretty quickly, but I’m probably forgetting about all the text that I had written for the websites beforehand. I took a lot of this text and rewrote it for the book. One of my secrets about writing ebooks is to develop the website (that you will use for promotion purposes) and the ebook simultaneously. You can then use some of your website content as ebook content. The advantage is that you get to rewrite the website content for your ebook.

Anyhow, I am really happy with this ebook and am sure that many will find its contents very helpful in improving their golf game.

For years, the internet was looked upon as a place to get free stuff – free mp3s, free information, free software, free videos and free porn. This attitude still pervades the internet today and makes it difficult for individuals to sell their products on the internet. People think they should get things for free on the internet. How does someone selling an ebook or other digital product survive in this type of atmosphere? I believe if you want to sell product on the internet, you have to attempt to partially satisfy this desire for free stuff. Give people some valuable information for free but just enough to entice them without revealing the whole enchilada.

I see alot of websites that deliver only empty promises of what their product will do for you. These websites completely lack substance. I’m constantly wondering how these websites sell any product.

With demo software, you get an opportunity to try it out. Perhaps a demo ebook that expired after so many days would be the way to address people’s need for free?

future topics – free ebook directories, more demo ebook talk, is the web just another tv, how to address buyers’ credibility concerns, using google’s keyword tool

Choose a topic based upon your specialized knowledge and that is exciting to you! As set out in the introduction, the goal here is to share your specialized knowledge with the rest of the world. My belief is that we all have specialized knowledge. Your specialized knowledge could be something you do for a living. It could be a hobby you engage in. It could be an experience you went through. The point is to write on something that the vast majority of people don’t know well. Sharing specialized knowledge is one of the reasons that ebooks are so popular. People want to know the best way to do something now. Most ebooks tell you how to do something. The majority of ebooks out there are “how-to” ebooks. Come up with a topic that tells people how to do something. After all, that’s what they are looking for – give them what they want.

Choose a topic that is exciting to you. If you are excited about your topic and it’s something you know well then writing your ebook should come fairly easily. If you are passionate about the topic you are writing on then you will be able to write most of the book fairly quickly. You’ll still run into some rough patches on, perhaps, areas you don’t know as well as you thought you did, but your excitement should carry you through those areas.

If you are excited about your topic but don’t know it as well as you thought, then that could become more problematic – but the momentum created by your excitement may carry you through to completion. Above all, don’t try to write something just to make money! Write because you are passionate about your topic.

The old adage – “If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is” – should be kept in mind when entering the ebook/internet industry. The general myth is that you will make tens of thousands of dollars a month selling your digital good with little work on your part. From my experience, I can tell you the following:

I recommend having a website from which you can sell your ebook. I’ll explore some other alternatives to selling your ebook on a website later. If you do decide to create your website to sell your ebook then consider the following:

1 – Websites don’t demand it but usually lead to constant tinkering. This is fine and good if you love to tinker and try to constantly improve sales and traffic and if you know html. If you don’t know html and are paying someone to design and maintain your website, you can quickly eat up your profits in site maintenance charges. So don’t believe the myth that you can create a website for digital product sales; it will run itself; and you will make tons of money with little effort and little expense.

2 – If you created a website and our selling a digital product on it then you are way beyond the average internet user in terms of computer savvy. What does this mean? Well, I often wonder how people were even able to buy my product in the first place with some of the tech support questions I get. Actually, I wonder how they got on the internet in the first place or even how they turned on their computer. This goes back to the first myth about internet business be self-sustaining and requiring little work. Hopefully, your customer issues are rare, but chances are you will be unable to create a maintenance free website and technical support free product. Be prepared to get your hands dirty.

3 – Concerning technical support issues – as they come up and if you have a forum, put the question/support issue and your response in the forum for all to see. Over time, you will cover almost all such issues and will be able to refer other customers there for similar issues.

4 – The internet is still in its infancy. If you hope to succeed then you will need to keep abreast of the latest changes in order to use them towards maintaining or increasing sales. There are no free lunches out there. Internet sales of digital products requires time and effort and constant learning. Anyone telling you any differently is trying to take your hard-earned in exchange for dreams and fantasy.

I received a question in my forum concerning creating ebooks from previously published works. Specifically, the question was – “However, before I do make my ebooks available, do I need to check anything regarding copyright of the originals or if the original books have since been re-published etc? ”

In essence the question is how long does copyright protection last. The US Copyright Office’s website answers the question for us. We have three separate categories.

1. For Works Originally Created on or after January 1, 1978

- Automatic copyright protection applies to works created on or after this date and extends for a period of the author’s life plus an additional 70 years after the author’s death.

- For a work created by 2 or more authors, protection extends for 70 years after the last author’s death.

- For anonymous or pseudonymous works, protection is 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.

2. For Works Originally Created before January 1, 1978, But Not Published or Registered by That Date

- same rules as above except “that in no case would the term of copyright for works in this category expire before December 31, 2002, and for works published on or before December 31, 2002, the term of copyright will not expire before December 31, 2047.”

3. For Works Originally Created and Published or Registered before January 1, 1978 – Here’s where it gets a bit confusing

- The pre 1978 law stated that “copyright was secured either on the date a work was published with a copyright notice or on the date of registration if the work was registered in unpublished form.” In either case, copyright lasted 28 years from the date secured. During the 28th year, the copyright was eligible for renewal. The renewal term was for 28 years.

In 1976, the renewal term became 47 years for copyrights that existed on January 1, 1978 and for pre-1978 copyrights restored under the Uruguay Round Agreements Act.

For copyrights that still existed as of October 27, 1998, an additional renewal term of 20 years was added.

Did the author have to apply for renewal or was it automatic for these works? In 1976 the Copyright Act was amended to allow for automatic renewal of copyrights for copyrights secured between January 1, 1964, and December 31, 1977. This same law makes renewal registration optional, so these 1964-1978 works are usually protected for a 95 year period. For pre 1964 works, you would have to determine if the author applied for renewal.

1 – Once you create your ebook or software application, it’s done. There’s no need to manufacture more product. You can always update your product, but you never need to make more of it.

2 – You can deliver the product immediately. Through services like Payloadz or software applications like Linklok, you can deliver your digital product to the customer immediately. In this day and age where everybody wants something now, you can fulfill their desires.

3 – You can deliver the product anywhere that has internet access. Wow, think of that! I can deliver my ebook to almost anyone in the world provided they can get on the net.

4 – It’s relatively inexpensive to create, market and sell an ebook or software application. There’s no inventory, no packaging costs, no shipping costs, and small production costs.

5 – Anyone can do it! If you have specialized knowledge or skill, you can share that with others. Sell your information on the internet.

6 – You can create a stream of income that leads well into the future. As long as you keep your information up to date, you can continue to sell your ebook well into the future.

7 – It requires little maintenance once you get your website up and running. Once you get past the initial startup of your sales website, little maintenacne is required to keep it going.

8 – It’s the wave of the future. Ebooks continue to catch on and become more and more popular. Soon there will be devices that are commonplace that hold dozens of ebooks.

9 – Once you’ve written one ebook and an accompanying sales website, you’ll end up writing more. Create your own library of ebooks for sale.

10 – Your potential market is not limited to those who can get to your store conveniently as you have no physical store. The world is your potential customer.
