I was looking for Paypal alternatives because you never know when Paypal is going to get a wild hair up its arse and freeze your account. In such a situation, it would be nice to have a second payment acceptance service on board so you could just sever the ties with Paypal at that point. I came across 2checkout.com and gave that the once over. It looked like a good deal until I checked out their fees.

Basic transaction fees are as advertised.

Signup/Account Establishment Fee:

There is a one-time set-up fee of $49.

Transaction Fees:

2CO applies a 5.5% commission on each transaction, plus a $0.45 charge per transaction.

Additional Penalties and Fees:

If you elect to pay the sign up fee via the check or PayPal method and we do not receive the funds, a manual adjustment can be made for the $49.00 plus a $25.00 manual processing fee from the current balance on the account.

Depending upon your funding selection, you can experience wire transfer costs. Additional fees can be applied for unsuccessful funding transfers, should the information provided to 2CO prove to be erroneous.

Should you elect to be paid by check, and fail to receive one via first-class mail, you can elect to pay applicable stop-payment fees in order to have the payment reissued in advance.

Chargeback (Bank Assisted Dispute) experience can also result in fees passed along to you. We strongly encourage all contracted suppliers to assist in combating credit card fraud in order to minimize or eliminate fees of this type. Fees can vary depending upon utilization experienced by various suppliers.

Ouch! $45 setup fee and 5.5% plus $0.45 on each transaction. Cha-ching!

That seems a little steep for me. I guess my alternatives are Clickbank and Amazon Honor System.

Clickbank fees are -

a one-time $49.95 activation charge that must be paid upon approval of your first product and I believe transaction charges similar to paypal’s but I’m not positive and am having trouble verifying that through Clickbank’s website.

Amazon Honor System fees are - $0.30 per transaction plus about 29% of total transaction price.

I could try to fire up Google Checkout but the last time I checked they had made that more and more complicated.

Dear Counselor,

A few months ago I recently sold off my web design firm in
Kirkland, Washington and in doing so I discovered that I own the
domain name columbustriallawyer.com.

I have owned it for years now and I think that when I was running
my design firm we developed a large website for a firm in
Columbus who had stiffed us on the bill.

That was years ago and now that my design firm has sold I no
longer need the name and have decided to let it go.

All that we are asking is what we were owed on the domain name
which was $3640. It’s worth far in excess of that and because it
matches the key words a consumer would type into a search engine
to find a lawyer in Columbus.

If you are interested please feel free to email me back. I live
in Kirkland, Washington and can fax over a simple agreement and
have no problem transferring ownership of the domain name over to
you prior to getting paid.

This is a one time email, and I will not email you again and I
apologize for the intrusion so there is no need to remove, but if
you wish to email me to remove you, simply reply to this email
address. My full name, address, and phone number are below.

Yours,

I was performing some site maintenance this morning and went to my blog at finishbasement.net. When I tried to load the page in my browser, nothing - just a blank page. I was a little concerned but not too much. These hackers couldn’t do anything that I couldn’t undo in short order. I logged into the site via my ftp application and began to go through the files.

First order of business - I decided to replace all the Wordpress 2.5.1 files with a fresh set. I basically just followed my instructions on updating a Wordpress blog. This didn’t work but when I viewed the code at my home page (which was still coming up blank), I remarked that there was considerably less code than before. So something had partially worked.

I began looking through the files on my website through the ftp application.

Here’s a shot of the files that they had somehow uploaded into my website files. Nice! Some good old fashioned poker sites. I deleted those and deleted any other questionable files. Since I upgrade Wordpress on a regular basis and do so with about 50 blogs, I know what files are legitimate and which ones are bogus.

Next, I took a look at my Wordpress plug-ins. They had added one called pre_adsense.php. Here’s the code that was in that file.

I deleted that file. Btw, I checked the home page again after deleting the poker files. No go. I checked it again after deleting the pre_adsense.php plugin. No go again. I started deleting all my Wordpress plug-ins. After I deleted adsense.php, the blog worked fine again. For safety measures, I now prevent any users from registering, and I checked to make sure that I had deleted all users (other than myself).

There’s my tale of Wordpress blog woe. Don’t be a victim. Keep a vigilant eye on your blogs and keep updated. I need to contact the author of the adsense.php plug-in and see if he is aware of this hack or if he has an update to adsense.php.

update: I was looking at some of their files that they had uploaded onto my website. How ’bout the nerve to claim a copyright on the following - I guess they can sue me for copyright violation:

With these improvements, eBay sellers offering PayPal must now accept all forms of PayPal payment, and are no longer allowed to block eChecks. Sellers still have the ability to block eChecks on non-eBay related checkout.

DIGITAL PUBLICATION DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT

This Digital Publication Distribution Agreement (the “Agreement”) is made as part of an online application (the “Application”) for participation in a digital self-publication and distribution program (”Program”) from Amazon Digital Services, Inc. (”Amazon” and, together with Amazon’s affiliates, “we” or “us”). This Agreement is a binding agreement between Amazon and the individual or entity identified as the Publisher in the Application (”you” or “Publisher”). The Agreement contains the complete terms and conditions that apply to your participation in the Program. As used in this Agreement, Amazon “affiliates” means any entity that directly or indirectly controls, is controlled by, or is under common control with Amazon. If the Publisher is an entity, “Authorized Representative” means the individual person identified as Authorized Representative in the Application who is accepting this Agreement on behalf of Publisher and, by accepting the Agreement in accordance with the instructions on our website, Authorized Representative hereby represents and warrants that:

Authorized Representative is entitled to enter this Agreement as an authorized representative of Publisher and to bind Publisher to the terms of this Agreement.

The information provided for Publisher in the Application is accurate, and states, without limitation, the real name, address and e-mail address of Publisher and Authorized Representative.
Amendment. We reserve the right to change the terms of this Agreement on thirty (30) days’ advance notice. We will notify you of changes to this Agreement by sending you an e-mail to the e-mail address registered for you in the Application. If you do not agree to the changes, you will be entitled to terminate the Agreement effective on thirty (30) days’ advance notice by providing us written notice (in the manner provided in Section 15) of termination due to the changes within seven (7) days of our notice to you. IF YOU DO NOT GIVE US NOTICE OF TERMINATION, YOUR CONTINUED PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM FOLLOWING OUR NOTICE TO YOU WILL CONSTITUTE YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE CHANGES.

Titles; Digital Books. This agreement covers each individual content file (a “Title”) that you submit to us in accordance with our Submission Requirements for the Program. The Program allows customers to purchase your Titles in the form of digital files that customers can download and access online (”Digital Books”).

Digital Books; Marketing and Promotion. You agree that we may market and promote your Digital Books by making chapters or portions of your Titles available to prospective customers without charge, and permitting prospective customers to see excerpts of the Digital Book in response to search queries. Amazon will not owe you any fees for the marketing and promotional efforts described above. The Program may include features that allow users to print one or more pages of your Titles.

Pricing and Program Terms. As part of your Application, you will provide us with a suggested retail price for each Title (”Suggested Retail Price” or “SRP”). The Suggested Retail Price you provide to Amazon must be consistent with the SRP you have provided to other retailers and wholesalers. However, we have sole and complete discretion to set the retail price to our customers for Digital Books. We are solely responsible for all promotions and solicitations to be used in connection with the marketing and sale of your Digital Books, and for processing payments, payment collection, requests for refunds and related customer service, and we will have sole ownership and control of all data obtained from customers and prospective customers in connection with the Program. You acknowledge that we have no obligation to market, distribute, or offer for sale any Digital Book or part thereof, or to continuing marketing, distributing or selling a Digital Book after we have commenced doing so.

Royalties. Provided you are not in breach of your obligations under this Agreement, we will pay you, for each Digital Book we sell, a royalty equal to thirty-five percent (35%) of the applicable Suggested Retail Price for such Digital Book, net of refunds, bad debt, and any taxes charged to a customer
(including without limitation sales taxes) (a “Royalty”).

Payment Terms. We will pay Royalties approximately sixty (60) days following the end of the calendar month during which applicable sales of Digital Books occur. We will, concurrently with payment, provide statements providing detail regarding sales of Digital Books and corresponding Royalties. All payments will be made in U.S. dollars via Electronic Funds Transfer (”EFT”) payments. You will not be permitted to register for the Program without providing a valid U.S. bank account number to receive EFT payments. We will accrue and withhold payments until the total amount due is at least $10, provided, however, that we may make a payout of all accrued amounts at any time in our discretion. All statements shall be conclusive, final and binding, unless Publisher gives Amazon written notice stating the specific basis for objection within six (6) months after the date rendered. You shall not maintain any action or proceeding against us in respect of any such statement unless you commence that action or suit within six (6) months following the date that you provide Amazon with the written notice referred to in the immediately preceding sentence. Any such action or proceeding shall be limited to a determination of the amount of monies, if any, payable by Amazon to you for the accounting periods in question, and your sole remedy shall be the recovery of those monies with no interest thereon.

Taxes. We are responsible for collecting and remitting any and all taxes imposed on our sale of Digital Books to customers. You are responsible for any income or other taxes due and payable resulting from amounts owed to you by us under this Agreement. Accordingly, unless otherwise stated, the amounts due to you hereunder are inclusive of any taxes that may apply to such payments. We maintain the right, however, to deduct or withhold any and all applicable taxes from such amounts, and the amounts due, as reduced by such deductions or withholdings, will constitute full payment and settlement to you.

Rights Granted. You hereby grant to us, throughout the term of this Agreement, a nonexclusive, irrevocable, worldwide right and license to distribute Digital Books as described herein, such right to include, without limitation, the right to:

(a) reproduce and store Titles on one or more computer facilities, and reformat, convert and encode Titles as Digital Books;
(c) permit customers to “store” Digital Books that they have purchased from us on Amazon’s servers (”Virtual Storage”) and to re-download such Digital Books from Virtual Storage from time to time;
(d) display and distribute
(i) your trademarks and logos in the form you provide them to us as part of your Application or within Titles (with such modifications as are necessary to optimize their viewing on Portable Devices), and
(ii) other limited portions of Titles, in each case on and through any Amazon Properties and solely for the purposes of marketing, soliciting and selling Digital Books;
(e) use, reproduce, adapt, modify, and create derivative works of any metadata that you submit as part of your Application for the purpose of improving categorization, recommendations, personalization features and other features of any Amazon Properties; and
(f) transmit, reproduce and otherwise use (or cause the reformatting, transmission, reproduction, and/or other use of) Titles as mere technological incidents to and for the limited purpose of technically enabling the foregoing (e.g., caching to enable display). In addition, you agree that Amazon may permit its affiliates and independent contractors, and affiliates’ independent contractors, to exercise the rights that you grant to us in this Agreement. “Amazon Properties” means the website with the primary home page identified by the URL http://www.amazon.com, together with any successor or replacement thereto (the “Amazon Site”), and any other web site or online point of presence, on any platform, that is owned or operated by or under license by Amazon or co-branded with Amazon (such as www.borders.com , www.waldenbooks.com, and www.target.com ), and any web site or online point of presence through which any Amazon Properties or products available for sale thereon are syndicated, offered, merchandised, advertised or described. “Portable Device” means any portable device that is capable of supporting the electronic purchase, display and/or management of digital text, graphics, audio, or video and/or other content.

Term and Termination. This Agreement will remain in effect unless and until terminated by either party in accordance with this Section. Amazon shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate this Agreement without cause upon not less than sixty (60) days’ advance notice to you. All rights to Digital Books acquired by customers prior to termination shall survive termination, and Amazon shall be entitled to retain archival copies of the Licensed Digital Content after termination in order to provide re-downloads to customers who have purchase Digital Books prior to termination. The following provisions of this Agreement will survive termination: Section 4, Sections 5-7 (but only to the extent of any payments that are accrued but unpaid at termination), Sections 9-15, and any provisions that define capitalized terms in the foregoing sections.

Technology. You acknowledge that we will be entitled to utilize DRM technology in connection with the distribution of Digital Books but are not obligated to do so. Accordingly, there may be no technology or other limitation imposed by us on copying or transfer of any Digital Book we distribute.
Ownership and Control of Amazon Properties. Subject to the authorizations granted to us hereunder, as between us and you, you retain all ownership rights in and to the copyrights and all other rights and interest in and to the Titles. We retain all ownership rights in and to the copyrights and all other rights and interests in and to the Program and the Amazon Properties. We are solely responsible for, and shall have full discretion with respect to the design and operation of the Program and the Amazon Properties and the marketing therefor, provided that Amazon’s use of the Titles pursuant to the rights granted herein shall be subject to the terms of this Agreement. In the event that you elect to provide suggestions, ideas, or other feedback to Amazon or any of its affiliates in connection with the Amazon Properties or the Program (”Feedback”), Amazon and its affiliates shall be free to use and exploit the same in any manner without restriction and without any need to compensate you therefor.

Clearances.
I’m in the process of transferring all my domains from Yahoo. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were trying to pad their value in order to look like a real bargain to Microsoft.

I was happy to see Jay Erlich aka “Jersey” get booted off of “A Shot at Love.” I think I only watched that show to see how long that tool would last. I really don’t understand how he made it past the first episode. How old is this kid, anyways? 17?

My theory is that Mtv kept him on the show because he was such a little bitch. Mtv clearly saw that Jersey could keep some viewers hooked after he stuck his head so far up Chad’s ass. Plus Mtv realized that viewers aged 13-21 could relate to the pint-sized alleged head-butter. A head butt might have been the only way that Jay could have reached Bo’s chin. Of course, that’s assuming Jersey had more than a 10 inch vertical.

Maybe Tila kept him around because he was only three inches taller than her 4′10″ frame.

I’m checking out “Personality No. 235005’s” blog and chicks are actually hitting on this dork. Just goes to show that there are plenty of 13 year old chicks out there for schleps like Jersey. Maybe we’ll see him on Flavor of Love 3.

We at StatCounter are having ongoing, critical problems with Paypal.

In view of the complete lack of assistance from Paypal in this regard and
the gravity of the problems, we have decided that we have no option but to
inform you, our members, about the facts of the situation. This will allow
you to make an informed decision about whether to use (or whether to
continue to use) Paypal.

Please note that these problems have been ongoing since 15 May and may
arise not only in relation to payments made to StatCounter but in relation
to ANY Paypal payments that you make. We hope that our communications will
equip you with the information necessary to make sure that YOU do not
become another victim of this ongoing Paypal saga.

The two major issues affecting StatCounter Paypal subscribers are:

- Delayed issuing of invoices
- Instances of double billing

At StatCounter we have tried phoning, emailing, posting on the Paypal
forums… Many of our contacts are ignored, but even when we do get an
answer all we are told is that “Upon review of your account, unfortunately
we do not have a time frame for a resolution to your issue we are currently
actively investigating your issue with subscriptions.”

Folks - we sincerely regret any problems you are experiencing and assure
you that we are doing our best to get all of these issues resolved for you.
We strive to offer a high level of customer service and pride ourselves on
being responsive to the needs and suggestions of our members. To have our
hands “tied” in this way as a result of Paypals inaction is frustrating to
say the least.

We would be very grateful for your patience at this time as we wait for
Paypal to resolve these issues.

We would also ask you to be patient with any of our fellow internet
merchants experiencing difficulties with Paypal at this time.

I’ve read posts from some people claiming to have quit their day job as a result of enormous adsense earnings. A lot of people inflate their max bench press by at least 25% as well. For that matter, people exaggerate about all sorts of things. Human nature is to exaggerate - to make ourselves seem better than we really are.

In my opinion, not many people quit their day job as a result of huge adsense profits because their day job is running websites to begin with. In other words, if you are making beaucoup adsense bucks, it’s because your main job is running websites. In my opinion, there are very few people who can hold down a 9 to 5 and somehow find the time to make one or more websites profitable enough to later quit that 9 to 5′er - unless you’re making $8 an hour at McDonald’s. You might be able to leave that job behind.

I’ve always said that adsense is only part of the formula to internet financial success. A multi-pronged financial attack is the plan to follow. A buddy and I jokingly refer to adsense as adcents or adpennies. When you first start out trying to turn the adsense buck, it can seem like adpennies. And friends may laugh at your $2-3 a day earnings. But $3 a day is still over a grand a year and close to a check a month from google. If you want to quit your day job, you better be thinking about a couple hundie a day.

Without further ado, here are my rules for adsense success:

1 - Don’t make adsense the sole income source for your websites.

2 - You’ll notice I said websites (plural) - I feel that you need to diversify with several websites if you want to turn the adsense buck unless you started a website a decade or so ago and already have a ton of traffic.

3 - Don’t overdo it though - stretch yourself too thin and you’ll only hurt your earnings.

4 - This is the number one rule - TRAFFIC! If you want to make a lot of money with adsense, you’ll need a lot of traffic. Hey, in most instances, you’re only getting pennies a click. You’re going to need several hundred to a thousand clicks to pull home the big adsense bucks.

5 - Don’t quit your day job even if you are pulling home some serious adsense coin. Adsense earnings can fluctuate dramatically with the prevailing internet weather. If you do quit your day job, then have other income generating sources on line.

I’ll focus on more detailed adsense earnings tips in my next post.

I operate several blogs - probably to my detriment. One indicator (besides traffic) that your blog has established an internet presence is people searching for your blog by name.

Of course, I understand that there’s a huge percentage of people out there who don’t know the difference between a search box and a url locater/address bar (and somebody has actually created a site entitled “Anatomy of a Web Browser“). In spite of this ignorance, your blog has achieved a certain amount of name recognition when your domain name becomes the top search term.

I run finerepast.com and the number one search key phrase for this month is “finerepast.com.” I guess I could have been a little more geo-targeted here and named the site “ColumbusFineDining.com” or something similar, but the plan was to review more than just Columbus restaurants. It’s nice to think on grander terms at the start of a website.

If you’re looking for signs that your blog/website has turned the corner in this ever expanding internet, name recognition is a strong one. Keep building on that brand recognition momentum to make the next steps forward.
