Importance of Google Adwords when starting a new site

What is Google Adwords? Google Adwords is a program where you can buy advertisements for your website or product that appear on google’s search pages when people type in searches that are similar to your ad/product. Your ad will also appear on websites related to your product. So you are always dealing with viewers who are searching for something related to your product. This means you have a better chance to sell your product. Your ads are targeted towards a specific market.

How do you do it? You just sign up at google adwords, create your text ad, define some other parameters, establish an advertising budget, and indicate how much you are willing to pay per click. That’s right. Your advertising costs are determined by how many times people click on your ads. You can also tell Google that if you get so many clicks in a day to no longer show your ad - this allows you to control your budget. If for example you indicate that you want to pay 5 cents per click, you can also tell Google that you only want $3 of clicks per day.

People click on your ad and then are sent to where you specify on your website. So make sure that your website page is ready for sales!

Scroll down a little and look to the right. Underneath “Ads by Google” are the ads that others have created that Google has determined are related to my site’s content. This is what your ad will look like and this is some of how the adwords program works. Your ad will also appear on Google’s search pages when people type in related searches.

Every day that passes it becomes more and more difficult to get traffic to startup websites. More and more people are online but more and more people are trying to take advantage of what I call, “the Adsense Goldrush.” So the internet is getting crowded with new sites and people trying to make a buck. These new websites may be competing with your website for traffic. The question becomes - how do you get traffic to your fledgling website?

You can use traditional methods such as link exchanges, posting on forums, writing articles, etc. I’ve found that Google Adwords is the way to go even if you are not selling a product on your website. If you can get your website in front of enough people, then somebody who has seen it may do some of your promotion work for you by linking to your site from their site or mentioning it in a forum or blog or by simply telling others about your site. I bought traffic at five cents a click to my site - www.getoutoflease.com - for several months and to the tune of about 10,000 visitors. I recently stopped the adwords campaign and was still averaging about 70 visitors a day of traffic.

I believe that the days of “building a site and they will come” are over. Free site promotion is becoming a rarity. Paid advertising has become part of everyone’s internet success.

Using the keyword longtail to save money on Google Adwords

So you just started your website and you’re faced with the age old problem of getting traffic. Looks like you are going to have to resort to buying traffic through Google Adwords. Oh, I see, you’re on a limited budget and don’t want to spend $50-$100 a day to get traffic to your site. Well, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to buy traffic to your site.

I use the bottom feeder approach to Google Adwords for a lot of my sites. Everyone wants to be ranked number one among the paid advertisers. Depending on the keywords that you are bidding on, that can easily lead to spending a lot of money quickly. I know you can set your budget and limit your spending. But what good is an adwords campaign if your budget for the day is already spent before 3 in the morning?

My solution is twofold - write better ads and substantially lower your bids. How can you lower your bids and still get traffic? Use Google’s keyword tool and instead of focusing on a few dozen keywords, broaden your horizons. Expand your keywords to a few thousand or even several thousand. Using Google’s keyword tool, within about an hour, you can come up with a few thousand keywords related to your site. Lower your bids to or close to the minimum to activate a high percentage of these keywords. Now work on improving your ad so that it stands out among the other paid advertisements. I’ll focus on that for my next article.

Using this method, I’ve bought hundreds of visitors a day for a few dollars.
