After watching the video that I’ve featured to the right, I decided I was going to try to hack a buddy’s website. I told him what I was going to do and he gave me the go ahead. It would’ve been much more fun to do it without asking. Just like in the video, I copied his html for the web page; changed the values from the original price to $0.01; opened the new page in my browser; and clicked on the Buy Now button. Sure enough, the price was now a penny – a savings of $12.98. I made the payment and, less than a minute later, received the download link to his product.

He tried the same to me but I had Payloadz’s price checking feature turned on so that product delivery to him did not occur. I told him that I thought it would be funny to buy his product for a penny; send him a bunch of emails complaining about the product; and then request a refund for the full price.

I did some searching to see if I could force an echeck on him but it doesn’t appear that that is controlled in the Buy Now button code. I was able to change some of the code and deactivate his product delivery system (at least for my order alone). Anyhow, it was a good lesson in being aware of what’s out there so you don’t lose a few sales to thieves.

There are still several problems with the hack. If the hacker pays with his paypal account or credit card, he has divulged his identity. Who’s going to ship a product if they only receive payment of a penny? It appears the hacker would have to steal someone’s credit card to pull it off and remain anonymous but what’s the point? He’d only be doing a favor to the cardholder by charging a penny per product. I wouldn’t even dignify this little trick by calling it a hack. It’s pretty brainless. In the end, it’s a good argument for encrypting your Buy Now buttons.

I’ve received so much traffic from writing about paypal echecks and other disasters that I’ve decided to reward the viewing public with another post about paypal echecks. Why does paypal say that an echeck is pending? This is a question that I received recently. It reflects a fundamental misconception about paypal echecks. Here, let me spell it out.PAYPAL ECHECKS ARE NOT – I REPEAT – ARE NOT INSTANTANEOUS TRANSFERS OF MONEY

I hope you got that. If not, back up and read it again. An echeck usually takes THREE TO FOUR BUSINESS DAYS to clear. What are business days? They are days other than weekends and holidays. So your paypal echeck could take 7 days to clear if you add in a three day weekend.

I received another related question. When should I ship the product if I receive an echeck?

When the echeck clears – is the right answer.

Here’s another related question. How does this affect the buyer?

The buyer will be very unhappy to wait because they think that an echeck is an instantaneous transfer of money. If you get such a buyer, refer him/her to my ALLCAPS bold statement above.

Thankyou and have a nice day

Ok, so I blocked acceptance of echecks as detailed in my earlier post on the matter. I sent out a request for payment to a client. Actually, this person was the final straw that broke the paypal echeck’s back with an earlier purchase of a product. I’ve included her last two messages to me below -___________________

Dear Andy,

I just paid for your Complete landlord’s kit on the web, (see proof below) but did not get my product. I got an “order pending” notice instead. Please contact me right away and tell me how to get my product. I wanted it immediately, that is why I took the download version.

sincerely,

Janet Roberts (name changed)

Dear Andrew,

It would help if the information below was on your web site and available BEFORE!!!! your customers use paypal. I am reluctant to pay you twice, since I do not know you and have never done business with you before. As it is, I am trusting you to have the products I desire in a form usable to me. I product I won’t see now for three days.

This is NOT good customer service. You sound like a smart man. You should fix it.

Jane Roberts

___________________

So guess what? I fixed it by blocking paypal echecks from now until hell freezes over. I sent her a request for money and guess what – I get an email from paypal indicating that she has paid me once again with an effin’ echeck. I haven’t received any echecks for products but why am I getting one in response to a request for payment?

Amazing! Maybe there is a different set of rules for requests for payment.

As far as the other customer who paid with echeck and now wants his money back because he didn’t get his product as quickly as he wanted (because he paid with an echeck), he filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau against me. What an a-hole! He lied to the BBB by saying that he never received the product. I responded and the next day or so later, I get an application to join the BBB in the mail. What a joke!

They can’t do anything to me unless I’m a member and now they want me to become one? Whatever! I’ll scan it in and let you read it for your enjoyment later.
